Trimester Scheduling
Recently Governor Granholm passed into law the Michigan Merit Curriculum. The Michigan Merit Curriculum includes graduation requirements that will prepare your son or daughter to compete in a global market place. This legislation increases the graduation requirements for the class of 2011 and beyond. North Lake High School will use a trimesterschedule in order to allow students to complete all of the new graduation requirements and allow for flexibility in elective choices. A trimester schedule has several basic components:•Three terms make up a school year: fall, winter and spring•Each term is approximately twelve weeks in length•Students will have five classes per term •A“year-long” course is two terms in length

Mrs. Carolyn Szymanski – Teacher Consultant

As the new teacher consultant at North Lake High School, please let me introduce myself.   I am Carolyn Szymanski and look forward to working with the students, staff and parents of North Lake.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Lake Superior State University, a Masters degree in Special Education from The University of Michigan Dearborn and an Endorsement in Autism from Oakland University.

I began my teaching career in 2000 at Concord Academy of Petoskey, moved to the Detroit area in 2005, and I come to you from my most recent position as a teacher consultant for Dove Academy of Detroit.  I worked with the students, parents and staff there for the past 5 years.

One day I hope you will meet my wonderful husband John and our six year old daughter Lilly.  As a family, we love to golf, ski, and go to the beach.  I am very excited to meet everyone and begin my new position at North Lake High School.

February Updates:

Parent Teacher Conferences:  Feb 15th:  5-7pm  (please note:  Mr. Geralds will not be at conferences but you can leave a message for him about your student and he will return your call.)

Changes to our policies and procedures that we are implementing for the 2nd semester.

1.  School starts at 8am and we will lock our doors at 8:05am from now on.  This is to curb the students that are continuing to come in late because they are smoking outside of school.  Students are to be in class by 8am.

2.  Our tardy policy has changed from 6 tardies = 1 absence to 3 tardies now = 1 absence

3.  Students who miss school during the week, must make up their school work on the "flex friday" of the same week or those assignments will turn to zero's.  This will allieviate any confusion of missing assignments or a backlog of papers that teacher must grade--many weeks after the assignment has been given.  This will allow for more accurate grade reporting in PowerSchool.

3rd Quarter:

1/30/12:  Beginning of 3rd quarter
2/3/12:    Students have a 1/2 day of school
2/8/12:    Count Day

2/17/12:  No School
2/20/12:  No School: Staff Professional Development Day

Mrs. Sarah Wit -- Social Worker
Hello, my name is Mrs. Sarah Wit and I am the new School Social Worker at North Lake High School.  I graduated in 2006 from Wayne State University with my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in metalsmithing.  While studying the arts, I obtained a minor in psychology.  After several years of working I returned to Wayne State University to complete my Master’s degree in Social Work.  Before coming to North Lake High School I was working as a Social Worker for the State of Michigan.

My husband, Adam and I have been married for a little over one year.  We are a very adventurous and have a goal of visiting all seventy five of the Michigan State Parks.  In my spare time I enjoy hiking, boating, cooking and spending time being creative.  I have a small jewelry studio where I enjoy creating wearable sculpture and I hope to one day have my own line of jewelry!

I am very honored and excited to be a part of North Lake High School. My first week at North Lake has made me even more excited to get involved in this school to help the students realize their special and unique attributes that will help them succeed in school and in their life after graduation. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, faculty and the families who support them each and every day.

Welcome back to School: Please remember that we have a
full day of school on Friday, January 6th.

Today, January 6th we lost a valuable member of our staff--Mrs. Helen Buyse, Social Worker to another position within the district.  Although we wish her well, all of us at North Lake will miss her listening ear, welcoming smile and calming effect.  The school held a assembly for her today in which the students and staff gave her cards, flowers and cake.  She will be greatly missed!

We are in the process of filling this position and hope to have someone by the beginning of 2nd semester.

December Updates:

Happy Holidays:  Christmas Break is Friday, Dec 23 thru Tuesday, Jan 3rd.

Our Environmental Club is proud to announce that we have begun the process of becoming a "GREEN SCHOOL.'  Our students will be collecting paper from all the classrooms and depositing it in the new recycling bin in our West lot.  Community members can also deposit thier newspapers, magazines, etc..in the bin and our school will get a certain percentage of monies back for each ton of paper we collect.

We are all looking forward to the four-three-two weeks we have of school in December:)

2012 Father's Conference:  Held at the Oakland Schools ISD on Jan28th.

Interesting Article on Standardized Tests and are they really worth it.

Our Last day of School is Thursday, Dec 22nd; for the holiday break and we return to school on Wednesday, January 4th.

Our Student Council is still collecting clothing for the holiday season.  Any 'washed' but used clothing including coats, gloves, hats, etc... are welcome for donation.  THese will all be distributed to local families in need of clothing and winter gear before our Holiday break.

The Bracelet Drive led by Student Council ended on Friday, Dec 2nd with the finale being held at Oakland Mall.  All the people who purchased bracelets, had the chance to get 2% or more off all items in the mall and/or win Large ticket items if they were present for the drawings.

November Updates:

Thanksgiving Celebration--Nov 22

On Tuesday, Nov 22, the North Lake Students, staff, and ESL students and staff will celebrate Thanksgiving by having a full feast of Turkey, Potatoes, Stuffing, Pies, etc... for our luncheon.  If there are any parents that would like to make donations of Cider, pop, or pies for the luncheon, they would be much appreciated.  Update:  It turned out to be a wonderful celebration with many of students enjoying a full thanksgiving meal.  We all had a great time, with many pictures of the students enjoying the lunch.

We welcome our new family member on Monday, Nov 21st:
Nina Giacona, was selected to be the new secretary to replace Ms. Lori.  Ms. Nina grew up in the Lake Shore School District and both she and her daughters graduated from Lake Shore.  She has previously held a position similar to this in the Chippewa Valley School District and has also worked as an attendance clerk and media clerk in the high school.
Her past time in Adult and Community Education and helping to set up the alternative high school in Chippewa Valley will bring a new perspective to our own program.

Please make sure to welcome her when she arrives.

2-4th quarters Grading and Attendance Policy:

We are sticking to the 8 absent rule.  A letter will go home to the parents each time a student is at the 5 absent mark in a class.  At absence 6 and 8, the seminar teacher will call home to advise a parent that their student is in danger of losing credit.  If a student goes over in attendance in quarters 2-4, they will lose the credit and recieve a grade of F if failiing the class or an NC if passing but over in attendance.

Remember, with the switch in attendance policy to the 15 minute late rule for first hour and 10 minute late rule to second hour, we should have less of an attendance issue than we have had in the past.  We must stand together as a team and continue to drill this into the students heads that they have to take responsibility for their attendance. We do not get the option of 32 sick days per school year (as staff of this building) and they are lucky to get this amount but it comes with a price.  If they go over, they may very well lose credit in a class--we would lose our jobs.

E2020:  Students should complete 100% of thier class each quarter but sometimes that may not be possible.  If this happens, a E2020 teacher will put the students class into a 'reserve status' and give them an NC for the quarter.  The student would be allowed to work on that class the next quarter once they have completed their other E2020 class or if they do not have an E2020 class, they would be allowed to come in after school on Tuesday/Wednesday or on Friday's to make up the additional work to get the class to 100%.

Their are a few students who can graduate this year but due to the classes they will have to take may not have an hour becuase they do not need the classes we are offering that particular hour(does that make sense?).  We have come up with an 'Independent Study' class that I will be the "mentor teacher" of, and will work with these students on projects for the school.  This can/will include community service projects for the school.  This way we are not allowing students to just leave campus since they do not have a class and we can beautify our building (i.e. flower beds, pop can clean up, garbage pick up, reading to childcare students, etc...).

Please remember to vote in the election tomorrow.  If you would like more information on the Macomb County Special Education Ballot Proposal, please go to the following link  http://macombschoolselection.org/questions.html

Today, we said goodbye to a member of our family, our secretary, Lori W.  She truly cared about the students and staff and we will miss her as she begins a new path in her life working for the Port Huron School District. The staff and students wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing you at graduation!

Nov 4th: Friday:  We have a 1/2 day of school
Nov 8th:  Tuesday:  Last of the 1st quarter--full day of class--Pizza is served for lunch
Nov 23th:  Wed:  1/2 day before Thanksgiving Break

October Updates:

Our students and staff had a great time handing out candy to the child care kids we share the building with.  The English as a Second Language Students (ESL) also participated and handed out candy.  It was a fun time and the North Lake students had a great time decorating the hallway for the kids to trick-or-treat down.

Our kids are decorating for Halloween and are excited about handing out candy to the child care kids in our building on the 31st.  WE HAVE A FULL DAY OF SCHOOL ON OCT 31st.

Thank you to all the parents that showed up to Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday evening, Oct 13th.  It was nice to meet so many supporters of the school and what we do for the students.
